Shostakovich Symphony No. 9

Regarded as one of the great pianists of our time, Armenian Sergei Babayan is widely praised "for his subtle beauty and emotional fire" (The Times). Babayan has frequently lent his genius to the Russian repertoire, having signed the remarkable album Prokofiev for Two with Martha Argerich. With the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and conducted by Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, he performs Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3. The programme also includes Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9, an ironic meditation on the consequences of war.
