St. Matthew Passion

St. Matthew Passion

First performed on Good Friday in 1727, the St. Matthew Passion is a grand work by J. S. Bach that today occupies a supreme place among the great choral repertoire. Working from a libretto by Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici), his partner in many cantatas, Bach follows in this monumental composition the final days in the life of Jesus Christ, interweaving the narrative from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew with Picander's poetry. Three hundred years after its premiere, this stirring work will once again be conducted by Martina Batič.
