Fairy Tales

In this Sunday Concert, we are transported by music's immense capacity to associate itself with grand narratives. In the cases of Humperdinck and Tchaikovsky, their scores were composed to help build the imagination of the children's narratives Hänsel und Gretel and The Sleeping Beauty, while Felix Mendelssohn wrote for one of Shakespeare's most enchanting comedies, based on the love triangle of A Midsummer Night's Dream. For his part, Mozart sublimated the fantasy of The Magic Flute. Cécile Chaminade poured into her Concertino all the expression of an epic romance. Photography © Leanne Punshon
