Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1
Orquestra Gulbenkian

As befits a work of youthful exuberance, Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra is rooted in artistic ambition and personal assertion. It is a piece of enormous impact and emotional investment, oscillating between grandeur and introspection, developed from a sonata for two pianos created in 1854, which the German composer continued to adapt and refine in the years that followed. This programme also features the Symphony No. 4 by Joly Braga Santos, a work that marks the end of a crucial creative cycle in the Portuguese composer's career.
