Two of Bach's finest cantatas, composed in Weimar (1714) and Leipzig (1726) respectively, are here combined with impressive works by Scarlatti and Stradella. The distance between the austerity of Lutheran piety and the fiery «emotionalism» of the Mediterranean may seem unbridgeable, yet Bach so admired the compositions of his Neapolitan colleagues that he made his own «parody» of them in his production. In this concert, Divino Sospiro and Ann Hallenberg demonstrate equal mastery in both styles.
Pre-concert conversation by Massimo Mazzeo at 19:30.
