The Disappearing Act
Yinka Esi Graves

BOX OFFICE OPENING – SEASON 2026_2027
June 18-21: exclusively for CCB Card holders
From June 22 onwards: general public
The Disappearing Act is the first solo creation by Yinka Esi Graves. The artist draws on her experience as an Afro-Caribbean flamenco dancer to explore questions of invisibility, absence and representation. On stage, the figure of La Lala proposes an experience in which camouflage and disappearance function as forms of resistance.
Through dance, live music, text and live video, the piece presents itself as an experimental flamenco work inspired by the tradition of Ghanaian Concert Party. Participating in this creation are guitarist Raúl Cantizano, drummer Donna Thompson and singer Rosa de Algeciras, who contribute to an artistic language between flamenco, jazz, hip hop and improvisation.
Developed through artistic residencies in the United Kingdom, Spain and France, the work premiered in 2023 at the Nîmes Flamenco Festival and has been presented at festivals and leading venues such as the GREC Festival de Barcelona, the Festival d'Avignon, Tanz im August in Berlin and the Chaillot Théâtre National de la Danse in Paris. In 2024, it was recognized by critic Claire Bishop as one of the ten best performances of the year for Artforum magazine.
The Fundação Centro Cultural de Belém reserves the right to capture, store and use image, sound and voice recordings for the purposes of dissemination and preservation of memory, whether of its cultural and artistic activities or of its spaces.
