Four Last Songs

Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs, written in the final phase of the composer's life, are usually understood as a peaceful farewell (offering his ultimate contribution to the lied), as well as a final love letter addressed to his wife of six decades, soprano Pauline de Ahna. In this Orquestra Gulbenkian concert, the performance will be given by Christina Nilsson, a singer who came to prominence as Aida in 2018 at the Royal Swedish Opera. Under the direction of Joshua Weilerstein, the programme also features Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra.
