Carnival Concert

Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa

Carnival Concert

Beyond the popular myths surrounding Beethoven and the monumentality of his music, it is worth remembering that he inspires many and varied moods. He himself had an unpredictable temperament, sometimes caustic or depressive, sometimes magnanimous or affectionate, sometimes mocking or playful. In this Carnival Concert, conductor Henrique Constância and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa explore this latter facet. Among other pieces, they recall the tick-tock of the metronome in the Eighth Symphony and the famous four notes that open the Fifth (said to represent fate knocking at the door). They also perform Walter Murphy's "A Quinta de Beethoven"; and let not the pun with the "quinto de galón", a traditional unit of measure in the USA for alcoholic beverages, go unnoticed. And also a musical parody of the nine symphonies by Louis Andriessen, for orchestra… and an ice cream vendor's bell.
