Marisol

The first retrospective dedicated to the drawings of Marisol Escobar (Paris, 1930 – New York, 2016) brings together more than 100 works produced from the 1950s until her death. Presented alongside sculptures that extend her practice of drawing in three dimensions, archival materials, and several films by Andy Warhol in which she participated, the works, almost entirely from the collection of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, highlight drawing — the medium through which she expressed global concerns, personal discomforts, and imaginative fictions — as the thread running through her career. The title refers to the question posed by gallerist Leo Castelli in the late 1950s — "How can you leave when things are just beginning?" — echoing the artist's decision to withdraw from the art world at crucial moments that involved the transformation of her work.
