On the day when the editorial team of a small independent investigative journalism project says goodbye to what was its first home, Carolina returns, after a long absence. Her return will confront her with the newspaper's new paradigm and unveil several delicate pending matters. A piece about freedom of the press and fundamental values, within a group where professional ties blur with intimate relations of love and friendship and where each person deals, in their own way, with a recent trauma that affected them all.

The piece explores complex moral and ethical dilemmas, the tension between ideals and survival, and the personal cost of pursuing truth in a system that penalizes dissent. Smoke is a reflection on loyalty, friendship and the compromises demanded when confronting injustice.

The text was written as part of the international project Writing on New Realities, from artistic residencies in Portugal and Turkey. It was published in Turkish edition by Habitus Kitap (2025).
