The girl born in Marco de Canaveses in 1909, crossed the Atlantic cradled in her mother's arms aboard a cargo ship heading for Brazil, and transformed herself into one of the greatest figures in the History of Entertainment. Carmen lived an intense life, full of romances, adventures and unexpected events that took her from Rio de Janeiro to Broadway, where she quickly became the biggest star. She was a true phenomenon: she revived the samba fashion, set trends and styles, and her famous fruit turban was imitated by thousands of women around the world. She quickly conquered Hollywood, becoming the highest-paid star of the 1940s and 50s. Her films drew crowds, her songs became etched in collective memory and are still being reinterpreted by the biggest pop stars, from Madonna to Lady Gaga.
