Canyon

Improvised music, embraced by its finest interpreters, is like a hotly contested sports competition with an unpredictable outcome. With Canyon's original quartet it is easy to understand that everything is possible. Drummer Jerome Deupree set the rhythm for the alternative rock of Morphine; cellist Lester St.Louis made his mark in Jamie Branch's Fly or Die band; guitarist Joe Morris is, for The Wire magazine, "one of the most profound improvisers currently active in the United States"; pianist Sylvie Courvoisier is a colossus of inventiveness, described by Deupree as someone who keeps the group "on the edge of their seats, because it seems the piano cannot contain her".
