The plot becomes complicated by the possible existence of a "third man", allegedly present at Harry's death, leading to police interference from major Calloway (Trevor Howard), and by Holly's growing attraction to Anna (Alida Valli), Harry's mistress. This elusive character is famously portrayed (and written) by Orson Welles.
